The Power of Nutrition would like to congratulate the Secretary of State for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, David Lammy, and the Minister for International Development Anneliese Dodds as they take on their new responsibilities. We urge them to review the UK’s commitments on nutrition. They are joining the FCDO at a time when the world is facing serious challenges in relation to food security and malnutrition. The lingering effects of the pandemic, the worsening climate crisis, cost of living increases, and escalating conflicts are exacerbating these challenges and destabilising global food systems. As a result, 3.1 billion people are not able to afford a nutritious diet… but, globally, nutrition receives just 1% of international development aid!

While fully recognising the continuing financial constraints, we encourage Mr. Lammy and Ms. Dodds to consider re-aligning development priorities to give greater support to nutrition. Good nutrition is an essential precondition for positive outcomes in many areas of development, including education, early childhood development, enhancing the life chances of adolescent girls, raising the wellbeing of women and families, strengthening national economies, and ensuring adaptation to climate change.
