Expert Opinion Webinar: A Conversation with Dr. David Nabarro

A Conversation with Dr. David Nabbaro on Protecting Nutrition Today for More Resilient People and Economies

speakers headshots

COVID-19 is impacting nutrition progress in developing countries and damaging fragile systems. A relatively low number of cases have been reported in the Global South, yet underlying issues in health and social security systems are still not being addressed – and COVID-19 is causing development funds to be diverted.

The Power of Nutrition hosted an interactive webinar with Dr. David Nabarro, Special Envoy of the WHO Director General on COVID-19 to understand the true impact of the pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa and India, and what the global community needs to do. An expert on nutrition, healthcare and development, David is one of the six Special Envoys to the WHO Director-General on COVID-19 providing high-level political advocacy and engagement to help WHO coordinate the global response to the pandemic.

Over 200 leaders in the nutrition space dialled in. You can view a recording below.

Key takeaways:

  • COVID-19 is revealing huge inequities within and between countries. It is also masking and exacerbating a silent nutrition crisis. Children are still dying from preventable illnesses – 800,000 children under 5 are dying from pneumonia and 875,000 from wasting every year.
  • Virus containment strategies must be considered as part of a broader response to creating stronger health, food and social systems.
  • COVID-19 is having a significant impact on international funding, and development aid is likely to decrease further. At the same time, many global targets are approaching and the replenishment landscape it crowded.
  • Keeping nutrition high on the global development agenda is crucial. Only by coordinating nutrition efforts and funds from both the private and public sectors can we address the pandemic and related health issues at the multi-system level and create healthier people and economies. Businesses play a critical role.
