The Power of Nutrition was founded with a single-minded goal – to bring more money into nutrition to help end stunting – the devastating effect severe malnutrition has on children, leaving them too short for their age and derailing their mental development.
As we come to the end of 2022, our seventh year, we’re delighted to be able to share that we’ve reached our original target of helping to avert 600,000 cases of stunting two years early. That’s 600,000 children who have received the right food and nutrition to grow up healthy and strong. We’ve done this by reaching over 115 million women, children and adolescents in our 20 programmes in 15 countries, together with our implementing partners.
Our achievements are thanks to the collaboration and support of our incredible partners. To date, we have convened more than 40 strategic partnerships with governments, corporates, foundations and civil society, and with the support of our founding partners – FCDO, CIFF, UBS Optimus Foundation, the World Bank and UNICEF, we continue to push forward with our mission to multiply funds and advance the fight against malnutrition across Africa and Asia. We work at scale to ensure we create significant impact as our reach numbers show, whilst believing that every mother and child matters.
There’s no hiding from the fact that the current landscape is different to that of seven years ago. We’re now dealing with the impact of a pandemic, soaring global costs of living and accelerated climate change. The global trend of reducing malnutrition rates is now being horribly reversed with the world on the edge of the worst malnutrition crisis for at least 40 years, whilst at the same time, governments’ budgets are squeezed.
Our organisation in tandem has evolved too. In the last 18 months we’ve adopted a new strategy, a new set of values, new leadership, new Trustees and new team members. Our new strategy sees us expand our focus beyond stunting to address all forms of malnutrition and through multisectoral solutions, supported by a range of new, flexible products to build collaborative partnerships. Whilst we still tackle stunting (aiming to avert an additional 800,000 cases by 2025), we’re also working to save the lives of 18,000 children under five by 2025, along with averting 450,000 cases of maternal anaemia.
