The Government of Tanzania, the World Bank and The Power of Nutrition are partnering to reduce child undernutrition in Tanzania, where 34.4 percent of children under five are stunted. The programme is using a programme-for-results model, where funds are only disbursed if health facilities and local government authorities meet certain pre-defined objectives related to good nutrition practices. This kind of financing instrument incentivises performance at all levels of the health system for nutrition and health service delivery and service quality indicators. This $44 million investment for nutrition is embedded within a wider $306 million programme for strengthening primary healthcare in Tanzania.
The programme aims to bring micronutrients and strengthened health services, and improve household nutrition practices for 20 million children and 5 million mothers by 2020. The direct impact of this activity has been modelled to be at least 67,000 lives saved and 166,000 cases of stunting prevented.
