The Government of Rwanda, the World Bank, the Global Financing Facility, and The Power of Nutrition are partnering to reduce child undernutrition in Rwanda, where 38 percent of children under five are stunted. This programme is the flagship support for President Paul Kagame’s ambitious commitment to eliminate stunting.
The programme aims to address the demand and supply side constraints to chronic malnutrition in 13 priority districts with high stunting rates and vulnerable populations. The programme includes: demand-side interventions to strengthen household care, feeding and WASH practices focused on the first 1,000 days; scale up of supply-side interventions to increase coverage and quality of health and nutrition services; and a large-scale pilot of nutrition conditional cash transfers (CCTs) to enhance access to adequate and diverse diets and health services for the most vulnerable mothers.
The programme includes additional innovations, such as results-based approaches for incentivising health workers, home and community based early childhood development models, and mass media approaches.
This programme aims to bring quality health and nutrition services and improve household behaviours for 560,000 children and 1.1 million women of reproductive age (of which 680,000 are pregnant or lactating) by 2022. The direct impact of this activity has been modelled to be at least 19,100 lives saved and 37,100 cases of stunting prevented.
