The Board of Directors of The Power of Nutrition is pleased to announce the appointment of Alvaro Bermejo as an independent Trustee with immediate effect.

Alvaro is an Executive Director at the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), where he oversees the Survive & Thrive portfolio, which includes work on nutrition, health, deworming and education.

CIFF is an independent philanthropic organisation working to transform the lives of poor and vulnerable children in developing countries and an investor in The Power of Nutrition. CIFF emphasizes the use of quality data and evidence in its programmes, which cover four key areas: climate change, education, health, and nutrition.

Alvaro has a wealth of development and health expertise, having worked across issues including HIV and AIDS, humanitarian issues, and health policy.

Prior to joining CIFF, he was Executive Director at the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, where he contributed to the design and implementation of its strategy, oversaw its rapid growth and expansion to 36 countries, and led a team which achieved significant policy influence.  From 2011 to 2013 he served as Board member for the Developed Country NGO delegation to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.  Prior to this he was Director of the Health and Care Department of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Alvaro was with the Federation for ten years, where his responsibilities included acting as the Head of the Planning and Evaluation Unit and Head of the Regional Delegation for South America.  He has also worked for the Spanish official overseas development assistance agency (AECI) and held field positions in primary health care programmes in both Bolivia and Nicaragua.

The Board and the Executive team look forward to working closely with Alvaro to accelerate the fight against child undernutrition and help children achieve their full potential.
